South Korea's largest cryptocurrency exchange Upbit has notified its users of stealing tens of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency from their wallet.
According to the head of the Dunamu management exchange company Lee Seok-Wu, on Wednesday, November 27, at 13:06, 342 thousand ETH (about $ 50 million) were transferred from the "hot" Ethereum wallet Upbit to an unknown wallet ( 0xa09871AEadF4994Ca12f5c0b6056BBd1d343c029
The administration of the exchange promised to protect users' assets and recover the stolen amount from their own assets. As a precaution, all assets were transferred from hot to cold wallet. As Lee Seok-Wu emphasized, all recent large transactions are associated with the transfer of funds from one wallet to another.
In his statement, Lee Seok-Woo apologized to users for the "inconvenience" while diligently avoiding the word "hacking." Who is behind the attack is still unknown.
In March of this year, Upbit and local information security company East Security reported that North Korean hackers carried out phishing attacks on exchange users. In January last year, the four largest cryptocurrency exchanges in South Korea, Bithumb, Upbit, Coinone and Korbit, opened a hotline to immediately detect and block suspicious transactions. Bithumb has fallen victim to hackers three times already.
