According to the international payment provider Worldpay, the number of contactless payments in the UK has increased by almost 50% over the past six months.
In November 2021, the number of contactless payments amounted to 16.3 million, and in April 2021 - 24.4 million. Experts noted that over the past 2 years, the volume of contactless transactions increased by 964%.
Worldpay currently processes over £ 2 billion in contactless payments in the UK. Moreover, since October last year, this amount has increased by £ 1 billion.
London is still in first place in terms of the number of contactless payments. It accounts for 38% of all contactless transactions. The South East of England is in second place (12%), East of England is in third (10%) and the southern part of England is in fourth (9%).
About 46% of all contactless payments in the UK are made in supermarkets and other grocery stores, 38% in bars and cafes, 13% in the rest of the retail sector.
“Consumers want a convenient payment method, and contactless technology offers that payment method. Currently, the number of contactless payments is growing rapidly in the retail, hospitality and entertainment sectors, ”said Worldpay Managing Director Dave Hobday.
As previously reported, despite the fact that contactless payments are already actively used in different countries around the world, in many US stores it is not yet possible to pay with a microchip card.
