Contactless payments in Europe grow sixfold in 12 months - Visa

European consumers have made 211 million contactless purchases in the past 12 months (August 2020 to July 2021), according to figures released by Visa Europe. Monthly spending on contactless payments also increased sixfold to € 285 million in July 2021 as users increasingly feel comfortable using contactless payment technology.

For 12 months, payments with Visa contactless cards amounted to 1.8 billion euros, and the average cost of one purchase was 8.63 euros.

Mark Austin, Vice President of Visa Europe and Head of Contactless Payments, said: “A year ago we launched a campaign to raise public awareness of contactless technologies and the convenience and practicality they provide. We are pleased to see that the technology is now being used more and more in Europe as users become more confident in making daily contactless payments. We are also happy to see the rapid growth of new stores that are introducing contactless payments."

In July 2021, there were 30 million contactless purchases, totaling 285 million euros (for comparison, in July 2020 the number of purchases was 6.8 million worth 48.5 million euros).

Currently, 69 million Visa contactless cards and more than 1 million contactless terminals are in use throughout Europe. The average amount of one purchase made by contactless means is 8.63 euros.

Visa also provides statistics on contactless payments in selected countries:

France:
  • 370,000 contactless purchases in July 2013
  • average cost of one purchase - 11.11 euros
  • more than 8.3 million contactless cards in the country (an increase of 229% per year)
  • 166,000 contactless terminals (an increase of 150% per year).

Poland:
  • 13.7 million contactless purchases in July 2013
  • average cost of one purchase - 6.18 euros
  • more than 10.1 million contactless cards in the country (an increase of 50% per year)
  • 140,000 contactless terminals (an increase of 87% per year).

Slovakia:
  • 2.1 million contactless purchases in July 2013
  • average cost of one purchase - 8.62 euros
  • more than 1.6 million contactless cards in the country (an increase of 128% per year)
  • 13,065 contactless terminals (an increase of 100% per year).

Spain:
  • 1.7 million contactless purchases in July 2013
  • average cost of one purchase - 34.39 euros
  • more than 4 million contactless cards in the country (an increase of 171% per year)
  • 266,020 contactless terminals (446% increase).

Turkey:
  • 670,000 contactless purchases in July 2013
  • average cost of one purchase - 9.25 euros
  • more than 6.3 million contactless cards in the country (an increase of 43% per year)
  • 76,329 contactless terminals (34% growth over the year).

United Kingdom:
  • 8.6 million contactless purchases in July 2013
  • average cost of one purchase - 7.12 euros
  • more than 29.8 million contactless cards in the country (an increase of 21% per year)
  • 288,009 contactless terminals (an increase of 137% per year).

We will remind, a few days ago it was reported that half of American smartphone owners use mobile payments.
