Controlling the movement of Gazans-security or espionage?

At a military base in southern Israel, five soldiers monitor the movements of hundreds of thousands of Gazan citizens on a huge screen. The screen displays a live map of northern Gaza, a densely populated area of approximately 1.1 million residents who were recently advised by the Israeli army to move south for their own safety. Using data mostly collected from more than 1 million mobile phones, the map allows soldiers to estimate in real time how many Gazans have met Israel's demands.

The Israeli army shared details of the data tracking system with The New York Times, demonstrating that soldiers are trying to reduce the number of civilian casualties as much as possible. On the screen, some areas were colored in different colors:
  • white and red colors mean that most of the residents are still in their homes;
  • green and yellow indicate that most residents of the area have left. It is worth noting that these areas are becoming more and more numerous.

"It's not a 100% perfect system, but it provides the information you need to make a decision. The colors indicate what we can and can't do," said one of the soldiers who oversees the monitoring process.
