Experts reveal the potential and limitations of AI in cybersecurity.

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) presented a report on a pilot project aimed at identifying and eliminating vulnerabilities in critical government systems using artificial intelligence.

From the end of 2023 to the beginning of 2024, the CISA team conducted an experiment to find out how much AI can improve the accuracy and speed of detecting vulnerabilities in networks and systems, compared to traditional tools.

Two scenarios were used to test AI tools: network security assessment of federal partners and testing in a controlled environment. The CISA Agency came to the following conclusions:
  • The best use of AI for vulnerability detection is to complement and improve existing tools, not replace them.;
  • In some cases, training analysts to work with new AI capabilities takes a significant amount of time, and the efficiency gains may be negligible;
  • In some cases, AI tools behave unpredictably, making troubleshooting difficult.

AI tools are constantly being improved, and CISA will continue to monitor the market and test new tools. The pilot project highlights the importance of integrating AI into cybersecurity processes and proves that even at the current stage of development, AI can already significantly improve the security of critical systems.
