Is the Volt Typhoon a Chinese threat or an American fabrication?
China accused the United States of inventing the Volt Typhoon hacker group and unreasonably attributing it to Beijing. A new report by Chinese officials claims that the U.S. and its allies are waging a disinformation campaign accusing China of cyber espionage. The document reiterates many of the claims made earlier in a similar report.
China claims that after previous publications on the topic, more than 50 cybersecurity experts contacted the country's agencies and expressed doubts about the evidence that the United States and Microsoft presented. However, the report does not provide the names of the experts or the details of their analysis.
The document also mentions already known facts about surveillance programs conducted by American agencies. For example, how the NSA used PRISM surveillance programs and spyware, which Edward Snowden revealed. Also mentioned is the CIA's Marble tool, which was used to hide the traces of cyberattacks.
Chinese authorities believe that all the actions described resemble the accusations that the United States brings against the Volt Typhoon group, and claim that this is actually an American operation, not a Chinese one.
In addition, the report accuses Microsoft and CrowdStrike of inventing names for hacker groups with political overtones, such as "typhoon" or "panda", and doing so for commercial gain without doing enough research. At the end of the document, there is a call for international cooperation in the field of cybersecurity and a call for developers to focus on creating the best technologies to protect against cyber threats.
