China has launched the fastest Internet in the world with a data transfer rate of 1.2 terabits (1200 gigabits) per second. The project was implemented by Tsinghua University, telecom operator China Monile, as well as Huawei Technologies and Cernet Corporation, writes the South China Morning Post (SCMP).
A fiber-optic Internet cable with record data transfer speeds is laid across Beijing, Wuhan and Guangzhou. Its length exceeds three thousand kilometers. The launch of the network was part of China's Future Internet Technology Infrastructure (FITI), which has been under development for ten years.
Prior to this, experts assumed that the launch of the network with a similar data transfer rate is possible only in 2025. Wang Lei, Vice President of Huawei Technologies, said that with a speed of 1.2 terabits, you can download 150 movies in HD format in one second. This is three times faster than in similar projects in the United States.
In July 2021, Japan broke the wired Internet speed record. The engineers managed to overclock the data transfer rate to 319 terabits per second. The previous record was set in 2020, when specialists managed to achieve a speed of 178 terabits per second.
