The Prosecutor General's Office of Belarus has announced a high-profile case related to computer crime. Sergei Novik, deputy head of the Department for Combating High-tech Crimes of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus (it is known as Department "K"), is under investigation. Rumors about the detention of a high-ranking policeman appeared in December, and yesterday they received official confirmation.

The Prosecutor General's Office said that a criminal case has been opened against the officer and he is in custody. Sergey Novik is accused of embezzlement of funds by using computer equipment (Article 212 of the Criminal Code). Most likely, the crime is related to carding, that is, stealing and using other people's credit cards. It is under this article that several carders have already been convicted in Belarus, who were caught by this very K Department.

The article under which the former policeman is charged provides for a penalty of up to 15 years in prison.
