Chicago police have arrested more than a dozen people on suspicion of stealing hundreds of luxury Mercedes-Benz cars from Car2Go, a car rental company. According to CBS Chicago, the attackers hacked the Car2Go mobile application, but the company itself denied this information and said that it was a fraud.

It is currently unknown how exactly the criminals managed to steal the cars. Apparently, the problem is limited to Chicago only. The local police are now taking steps to return the vehicles. According to CBS Chicago, many of the stolen cars were "used to commit crimes."

A police spokesman told The Verge that law enforcement officers detained 16 people suspected of theft.

“We have received a statement from a car rental company that some of the cars could have been leased through a mobile application in a fraudulent or deceptive manner. A number of cars have already been returned, the suspects are being interrogated, ”the police said in a statement.

Due to theft, Car2Go temporarily suspended the service in Chicago. According to the company, this is not a hack, but a case of fraud, limited only to Chicago. Car2Go also claims that the personal or confidential information of the company's clients was not harmed as a result of the incident.
