The teen spent some of the money buying rare usernames in games, which brought the police to him.

Canadian law enforcement officers arrested a teenager on suspicion of stealing cryptocurrency worth about $ 36.5 million from a single person in the United States. Police in the city of Hamilton (Ontario, Canada) called the incident the largest single person theft of a cryptocurrency in history.

The victim became a victim of the so-called SIM swap - the attacker gained access to his phone number and intercepted the two-factor authentication codes, thanks to which he was able to gain control over the protected wallet.

The thief spent some of the stolen money buying rare usernames in online games, which led to the Hamilton Police Department, the FBI and the US Secret Service's Electronic Crimes Working Group. After the arrest of the teenager, law enforcement officers seized from him about $ 5.5 million in stolen cryptocurrency.

2021 has been a landmark year in terms of cryptocurrency theft. In June, South African investors lost $ 3.6 billion in bitcoin following the disappearance of the founders of the country's largest cryptocurrency exchange. In the same month, police in the UK seized about $ 158 million in various cryptocurrencies. At that time, it was the largest seizure of property of this kind in the history of the country.
