The hackers demand a ransom of $5 million.

Hungarian officials confirmed to local media the fact of a cyberattack on the national defense procurement agency (VBÜ). According to the authorities, an "international group of hackers" is behind the attack.

Earlier on Thursday, the hacker group INC Ransomware (also known as INC Ransom) posted screenshots on the darknet allegedly confirming access to the agency's data. According to previous research, the group emerged last year and specializes in attacks on medical, educational, and government institutions. The identities of the participants remain unknown.

The Hungarian Ministry of Defense declined to comment on the possible leak, citing an ongoing investigation. The department assured that VBÜ does not store secret military data. Hungary is a member of NATO.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban's chief of staff, Gergely Gulyas, called the attackers a "hostile foreign non-state hacker group," without specifying a specific name. According to Gulyas, the most important data that attackers could access includes "plans and information about military procurement."

According to the Hungarian publication Magyar Hang, INC Ransomware hackers hacked the agency's servers, downloaded and encrypted all files. The media reports that among the published materials there are documents about the air and land capabilities of the Hungarian army, as well as files marked "not for publication." The leaked data is relatively fresh - some documents are dated October of this year. To unlock the files, the hackers demand a ransom of $5 million.

Hungarian authorities have not commented on whether negotiations with the hackers are underway.
