BRICS has developed a draft multilateral agreement on the interaction of prosecutorial services for the return of illegal assets from abroad, said Russian Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov.
The head of the supervisory authority discussed this issue with colleagues from South Africa and Egypt during working meetings in Rio de Janeiro on the eve of the G20 Summit of Heads of Prosecution Services.
"The expert seminar held in May in St. Petersburg on the return of assets of criminal origin from abroad demonstrated the high interest of all BRICS colleagues in improving this work. To this end, a draft multilateral agreement on cooperation between the prosecution services of the BRICS countries in this area has been prepared on an initiative basis. I am sure that the adoption of such a document will allow us to build cooperation in the most constructive and beneficial way for all parties", Krasnov said in an interview with the National Director of the Criminal Prosecution Service of South Africa Shamila Batoyi.
He invited the head of the South African Criminal Prosecution Service to support the draft document.
Krasnov also stressed the special importance of cooperation in the field of combating corruption and the return of assets obtained by criminal means from abroad during a meeting with the Prosecutor General of Egypt Mohamed Shawki Ayad.
The head of the Russian supervisory authority drew attention to the active interaction of the prosecutor's offices of the two countries on a wide range of issues, including in the context of the implementation of previously signed agreements.
"Among the priority measures, I see the synchronization of our approaches in the BRICS format to effectively counter the challenges in the return of assets from abroad. First of all, I am talking about the regulation of interaction outside the criminal law sphere, taking into account the specifics of the arrest and confiscation of cryptocurrencies and other virtual assets, the construction of uniform algorithms understandable to all parties for working in bilateral and multilateral formats", Krasnov stressed.
At the same time, he expressed confidence that the adoption of the relevant multilateral agreement between the prosecutor's offices will bring joint activities in this area to a "qualitatively new level".
