The history of the family business is coming to an end.

Ilya Lichtenstein, who has Russian and US citizenship, and his wife, American Heather Morgan, admitted to laundering money that was stolen during a cyber attack on the Bitfinex crypto exchange in 2016. This was reported by the US Department of Justice.

The couple admitted that they entered into a criminal conspiracy to launder approximately 120 thousand bitcoins stolen from the international crypto exchange Bitfinex. As previously stated , the couple agreed to cooperate with American law enforcement agencies.

The couple was arrested in New York in February 2022. The court then decided to move Lichtenstein and Morgan from New York to Washington for further consideration of the case. A press release from the Justice Department notes that Liechtenstein can receive a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, and Morgan-up to 10 years.

According to the US Department of Justice, stolen bitcoins equivalent to $3.6 billion were confiscated during the investigation of the cyber attack on Bitfinex. The couple allegedly used various methods to launder the stolen funds, including creating fake accounts, transferring money to other exchanges, and converting bitcoins to other cryptocurrencies.

Earlier it was reported that Israeli law enforcement officers arrested two brothers suspected of hacking the Bitfinex cryptocurrency exchange and carrying out phishing attacks. Brothers Eli and Assaf Gigi are suspected of long-term systematic theft of cryptocurrency, which they accessed by hacking user accounts. According to the police, the attackers managed to steal tens of millions of dollars.

In addition, in 2021, a hacker from the Indian state of Karnataka confessed to hacking the Bitfinex and BTC-e cryptocurrency exchanges, phishing, and numerous attacks on other sites.
