Bitcoin ATMs may seem like very secure equipment, however, according to a report from experts at the Kraken cryptocurrency exchange, the network of such ATMs in the United States is vulnerable to hacker attacks, including due to security flaws.

Bitcoin ATMs allow users to convert local currency into cryptocurrency, but basic data such as server and application addresses can be easily modified, Kraken said in a report.

Bitcoin ATMs are widespread all over the world, but in the USA they are the most - more than 22,235. Canada is in second place in terms of their number (1,776 in total).

According to experts, users should be especially wary of GBBATM2 bitcoin ATMs.

In addition to the problems common to all Bitcoin ATMs, GBBATM2 models often do not change the factory QR code common to many ATMs, making them easy targets for cybercriminals. They're easy to unlock and don't even have an alarm, and the Android-based operating system allows anyone to install apps, giving attackers the ability to easily generate their own authorization requests as there is no cross-site request forgery protection.

"The devices do not display any local or server-side notifications other than messages that internal components have been accessed. Currently, a potential attacker can break into an ATM cash drawer, an embedded computer, a web camera and a fingerprint reader," the report says.

Experts recommend using only trusted ATMs, and before carrying out transactions, check whether they are reliably protected and equipped with video surveillance cameras.
