Cryptocurrency exchange Binance has warned its users about the threat posed by clippers. According to the company, recently attacks by such malware have led to "significant financial losses for victims".
Binance reminds that Clippers monitor the activity on the victim's clipboard and steal confidential user data, as well as replace cryptocurrency addresses in the buffer with others under the control of attackers. As a result, transfers initiated on the hacked side are not sent to the destination address, but end up in the hackers' wallet.
Representatives of the crypto exchange write that they are currently monitoring the widespread threat associated with such malware. The malware intercepts data on the clipboard in order to spoof cryptocurrency wallet addresses.
Binance warns that users often accidentally install malicious applications themselves when looking for programs in their native language or in unofficial sources (primarily in countries where various restrictions apply).
The company assured that it is taking measures to blacklist the addresses of the attackers to prevent further activity of fraudsters, and has already notified the affected users (the exact number of victims is not reported), advising them to look for suspicious software and plugins.
Note that last month, Chainalysis specialists reported that the total number of cryptocurrency thefts continues to grow: in the first half of 2024, cybercriminals "earned" almost $1.6 billion, while in the same period in 2023 their profit was $857 million. At the same time, the total volume of illegal activity in the blockchain, according to researchers, has decreased by almost 20% since the beginning of this year.
