The famous cryptocurrency exchange Binance, as it turned out, played a significant role in the recent arrest of members of the cybercriminal group that distributes the ransomware Clop. In particular, representatives of the crypto exchange helped identify and detain the suspects.

Binance itself, which calls the operators Clop FANCYCAT, claims that cybercriminals laundered money obtained not only during ransomware attacks, but also through other illegal activities.

In a blog post, Binance explained that the exchange's security team contributed to an international investigation that resulted in the arrest of members of the group using Clop in cyberattacks.

As the law enforcement agencies of Ukraine found out, the attackers managed to inflict financial losses in the amount of $ 500 million. To launder the funds received, the criminals resorted to the help of cryptocurrency exchanges.

“These attackers are attracted by the liquidity of reputable exchanges, a variety of digital asset offerings, and well-designed APIs,” wrote Binance officials.

Moreover, the crypto exchange found that the FANCYCAT group is not only behind the money laundering associated with the Clop attacks, but also involved in similar activities in the case of Petya and other malicious operations. It was this information that helped law enforcement officers find the criminals.

Recall that recently a new portion of stolen confidential data appeared on the Web, apparently belonging to the new victim of Clop. This may indicate that even after the arrest, operations to distribute the ransomware continue.
