Gates: AI will allow us to work less and live a better life.
Billionaire Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has suggested that advances in artificial intelligence (AI) could lead to a reduction in the standard workweek to three days. He made this statement during an interview for the podcast " What Now?", released on Spotify on November 21, according to the publication Business Insider.
When asked by the podcast host, Trevor Noah, whether the development of artificial intelligence threatens jobs, Gates said that there will come a time when people "don't have to work so hard." He envisioned a scenario where " machines will produce all the food and more."
"If we end up with a society where you only have to work three days a week, that's perfectly acceptable," Gates said.
As Business Insider points out, Gates already spoke in July on his blog about the need to support and retrain employees in light of the development of AI, calling for an active role for governments and companies. He compared the potential impact of AI to the industrial revolution and the advent of personal computers, highlighting the significance of these changes.
Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan, also predicted a reduction in the workweek to 3.5 days thanks to artificial intelligence. "Your children will live up to 100 years without cancer thanks to technology, and probably work about three and a half days a week," he said in an interview with Bloomberg.
Gates once considered sleep a sign of laziness and told Noah that from the age of 18 to 40, his life was completely devoted to Microsoft. Now he believes that "the meaning of life is not only in work."
