A barcode is a set of geometric symbols that are placed on plastic cards according to an established standard.

Most barcodes are vertical rectangles of varying widths. It is a set of such rectangles that is nothing more than data represented in machine code.

Roughly speaking, a barcode can be thought of as a serial number. The numbers and signs present on it are nothing more than a certain identifier, which is recorded by a special device and is used to search and determine additional information about any product or service.

As for the barcode on plastic cards, it acts as a client identifier. This code can be used to determine the cost of a product or service, as well as possible discounts and other commercial data.

Today, various plastic cards can be equipped with a magnetic stripe or a barcode. A barcode is, in fact, considered much better than magnetic tape, which is confirmed by a couple of advantages. Firstly, it is believed that barcode processing is much more accurate than manually typing the same characters and numbers, and even more accurate than reading magnetic tape. Secondly, the code is read and processed by machines much faster.

Among other things, applying a barcode to a plastic card is much cheaper than applying a magnetic tape to it. And given that the barcode does not depend on the influence of magnetic fields and is not subject to severe abrasion, the data encrypted in it has a long shelf life, which, of course, differs from cards with magnetic tape.

As for the typology of barcodes, they can be linear and two-dimensional. Today, linear barcodes are the most widely used, because their creation and application to a plastic card requires minimal costs. These types differ only in that linear barcodes allow encoding a small amount of information exclusively in the horizontal direction, since the two-dimensional execution of the code makes it possible to encode information in both vertical and horizontal directions.

  • To ensure long-term operation of the barcode on plastic cards, you must adhere to several rules when producing plastic cards :
  • it is necessary to exclude any possibility of enlarging and compressing the barcode to avoid data loss;
  • a barcode should be applied to the card in full accordance with the parameters of this technology;
  • set the barcode width in full accordance with the capabilities of the scanner;
  • use exclusively black color for barcode production, since only it can ensure correct reading of information.
