The company is faced with a choice - buyout or the risk of leakage.
Schneider Electric, an international company specializing in energy management, confirmed the fact of hacking of its systems. The hacker group HellCat demanded a ransom of 125 thousand dollars, jokingly calling the amount "baguettes".
According to information from darknet forums on November 2, attackers stole more than 40 GB of compressed data. The stolen materials contain critical information about the company's projects, various developments and plugins, as well as over 400 thousand lines of user data. Presumably, the cybercriminals gained access to the Atlassian Jira system used by Schneider Electric.
Over the weekend, another hacker under the pseudonym 'grep' publicly stated on the social network X that despite the discovery of the hack and the restart of services by the company, the attackers retained access to the systems.
In a comment to Bleeping Computer, representatives of Schneider Electric acknowledged the fact that external attackers had penetrated the internal project tracking platform. At the same time, the company assured that services and products remain fully operational.
The hackers put forward a condition: in the event of public recognition of the fact of hacking by the company's CEO, the ransom amount will be halved. Otherwise, the attackers threaten to distribute the stolen information.
In February of this year, the Cactus group attacked the company, claiming to have stolen 1.5 terabytes of confidential data. The criminals published 25 megabytes of stolen information on their website as evidence.
Schneider Electric is a Fortune Global 500 company with an estimated market value of around $145 billion.
