How the latest technology helped turn an old John Lennon record into a masterpiece.

The Beatles presented their latest song "Now and Then"to the audience. Since November 2, the track, which was created by Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, is available for listening on music streaming services. Interest in this composition has increased due to the unique process of its creation, which involved machine learning technologies.

The track's history dates back to the mid-90s, when band members Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr first attempted to refine John Lennon's "Now and Then" demo. However, due to technical limitations of the time, work on the song was suspended.

Paul McCartney in an interview with The Verge shared : "On the demo tape, John's voice was barely audible over the loud piano. And in those days, we didn't have the technology to separate his voice from the music. Every time we wanted to hear John's voice, this piano would appear and darken the picture."

The crucial moment came in 2021, with the release of Peter Jackson's documentary "The Return," dedicated to The Beatles. The film team developed a technology that made it possible to take almost any piece of music (even ancient demos) and "separate all the different components into separate tracks based on machine learning." This discovery inspired McCartney and Starr to complete work on "Now and Then".

"Now we could mix it and make a real record out of it," McCartney said. He recorded bass, Starr added drums, and producer Giles Martin came up with a string arrangement "like Giles father used to do in the good old days." The result was the appearance of "Now and Then" on streaming services.

The song "Now and Then" is already available on YouTube, Apple Music and Spotify. Residents of Russia can get acquainted with the new creation of the group on the VK platform.
