Due to a cyberattack, passengers may lose their bank cards.
Spanish airline Air Europa has urged customers to block their credit cards after a cyberattack affected the firm's online payment system. According to the airline, hackers gained access to the credit card data of some of its customers.
The Majorca-based company did not say how many customers were affected or when the attack occurred. Information about the nature and source of the cyberattack was also not received. Representatives of the airline said that at the moment there is no evidence that the security breach was used to commit fraud.
The airline, like the relevant financial institutions, sends emails to affected customers. Customers are warned that any bank cards used to pay on the Air Europa website must be cancelled and replaced "to avoid possible fraudulent use of your information".
The Spanish Consumer Association (Organization of Consumers and Users, OCU) recommended that users who received an email follow the advice of Air Europa and called on the country's supervisory authorities to find out when the cyber attack occurred, since unauthorized use of cards could have preceded the company's warning.
