Anthropic teams up with Palantir and AWS to sell AI to defense customers.
Anthropic has announced a strategic partnership with analyst firm Palantir and cloud provider Amazon Web Services (AWS) to provide U.S. intelligence and defense agencies with access to the Claude family of artificial intelligence models.
The collaboration involves integrating Claude models into the Palantir platform using AWS infrastructure. In early March, the models were already available in the Palantir Impact Level 6 (IL6) certified defense environment. The U.S. Department of Defense IL6 is designed for systems that contain critical national security data and require maximum protection against unauthorized access. Information in IL6 systems may be classified as "classified".
According to Anthropic's head of sales, Keith Earl Jensen, access to Claude through the AWS-based Palantir platform will provide U.S. defense and intelligence organizations with powerful AI tools to quickly process and analyze large amounts of complex data. The partnership will significantly improve the process of analyzing intelligence and helping officials in decision-making, streamlining resource-intensive tasks and increasing the efficiency of departments.
In the summer of 2024, Anthropic hosted select Claude models on AWS GovCloud, AWS's purpose-built cloud service for U.S. government needs, signaling the company's intention to expand its customer base in the public sector.
Anthropic positions itself as a supplier that pays more attention to security compared to competitors. The terms of use of the company's products allow use for tasks that include authorized intelligence analysis, detection of covert influence or sabotage campaigns, and early warning of potential military action.
Anthropic's partnership with government agencies reflects a growing trend among AI developers. Meta* recently made Llama models available to defense partners, and OpenAI is looking to forge closer ties with the U.S. Department of Defense.
According to a March 2024 analysis by the Brookings Institution, the number of AI-related government contracts has increased by 1200%. However, some agencies, including the U.S. military, have been slow to adopt technology and remain skeptical about the return on investment.
Anthropic, which recently entered the European market, is currently negotiating a new round of funding with a potential valuation of up to $40 billion. So far, the company has raised about $7.6 billion, including future liabilities. The largest investor is Amazon.
