In May, eight cryptocurrency traders were arrested by law enforcement agencies in Herat province and spent 28 days in prison.

One of the crypto traders, who preferred to remain anonymous, told Crypto. news that the Taliban-controlled police arrested him and seven others for the very fact of trading digital assets.

"Earlier, the Central Bank of Afghanistan ordered to stop all currency exchange, not to allow individuals and businessmen to trade fraudulent digital coins like bitcoin," Syed Shah Saadaat, head of the criminal investigation department of the Herat Police Department, explained to the publication.

In August 2021, after the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan, supporters of the Taliban movement came to power in the country, and Afghanistan was cut off from the banking system. Against this background, a significant part of citizens drew attention to digital assets as the only possible way to receive financial assistance from abroad and protect their savings.

The Taliban regime has imposed a nationwide ban on any cryptocurrency, calling it a sinful business. Violators of the bans of the new administration of Afghanistan face a prison term of up to six months and confiscation of crypto assets. In June 2022, the Central Bank of Afghanistan banned operations with digital assets, and representatives of the Taliban closed about 16 cryptocurrency exchanges and made demonstrative arrests of businessmen.
