What can such a minimalistic distribution do in its latest iteration?

The latest version of Tiny Core Linux v15. 0, released on February 22, proves that even in 2024, a full-fledged operating system with a graphical interface can take up much less space than Windows 95, released almost 30 years ago, while remaining very modern and functional.

Recently, we talked about the "damn small" distribution of Damn Small Linux (DSL), which in its latest version is not too fat and began to occupy about 650 MB before installation and 3.3 GB after it. All this, although impressive, is not even close to the hero of today's material.

Tiny Core Linux is available in two versions: x86 and x86-64, based on the 6.6.8 kernel, glibc 2.38 and including GCC version 13.2. The distribution is offered in three versions: Core-only text interface (17.8 MB), TinyCore with a graphical desktop (24 MB) and CorePlus (265 MB), which includes it includes dozens of additional applications.

As you can see, even the most stuffed version of the distribution kit weighs almost three times less than the aforementioned DSL, when like CorePlus with a graphical interface, it weighs much less than the average Android application. And here, in fact, the whole operating system.

In the TinyCore version, the distribution shows incredibly low consumption of disk space (24.4 MB after installation) and RAM (52 MB after launch), while remaining a full-fledged operating system capable of running on a modern multi-core PC.

After testing the CorePlus edition (265 MB), you can make sure that even its launch takes a few seconds, including on older computers.

Tiny Core Linux stands out among other distributions by its unique architecture: the operating system is fully loaded into RAM, which provides lightning-fast operation speed. The system also uses its own package management system, which allows you to install applications without changing the root file system.

Despite its minimalism and non-standard approach to installation and operation, Tiny Core Linux, especially in the CorePlus version, offers a full set of tools for Internet surfing, working with documents and other tasks. The distribution package can also be flexibly configured for specific user needs, including creating your own ISO images.

Tiny Core Linux is an excellent choice for those who are looking for an extremely lightweight, yet modern and functional operating system. The distribution kit is perfect for both reviving old technology and getting to know Linux for the first time.
