US authorities have revealed how AI makes it easier for hackers to achieve their goals.

US Deputy National Security Adviser Ann Neuberger has revealed that North Korea is building up its cyber capabilities using the power of artificial intelligence( AI), which poses a significant threat to businesses around the world.

This is the first time a U.S. government official has publicly confirmed the use of AI in cyber warfare. Neuberger noted that the NSA is monitoring how North Korea and other states, as well as individual cybercriminals, are trying to use AI models to accelerate the creation of malware and identify systems for exploitation.

The representative also stressed that using AI to speed up the process of writing exploits could significantly enhance North Korea's offensive cyber capabilities. With the help of machine learning, hackers could find and exploit vulnerabilities more efficiently.

The potential implications for international business are large. The proven track record of major cyber attacks by North Korean hackers in Korea, from the 2014 Sony Pictures hack to the massive WannaCry ransomware campaign in 2017, highlights the global threat posed by the country's cyber activities. Integrating AI into such operations can potentially increase the speed, volume, and effectiveness of such attacks, putting companies at greater risk.

Compounding the gravity of the situation, Neuberger stressed that North Korea's campaigns, including the theft of cryptocurrencies around the world, serve as a significant source of revenue to support the country's missile program, which has contributed to an increase in the number of launches over the past few years.

Neuberger also mentioned the DARPA AI Cyber Challenge program, which is aimed at protecting infrastructure. The US is using the program to keep up with growing cyber threats. The project is used "to encourage and activate pentesters who use AI to create cybersecurity protection tools." The strategic goal of the program is to ensure the superiority of AI in defense against hostile AI tools.

Revelations about North Korea's achievements in AI-enabled cyberattacks should send a message to businesses about the need for powerful and progressive cybersecurity strategies.
