Ara Malkhasyan, a California resident, was sentenced to six years and nine months in prison for stealing more than $ 1.7 million from major banks through a check fraud scheme. KTLA journalists claim that the 52-year-old ethnic Armenian was the organizer and mastermind of the group, which consisted almost entirely of his relatives.

The investigation found out that from 2015 to 2017, Malkhasyan and his accomplices received stolen Armenian passports and changed them by pasting their photos. According to these documents, they received others and, having acquired complete sets, opened bank accounts. After that, Malkhasyan and his accomplices wrote out fake checks to other fake accounts, from which they transferred funds to themselves. Cashing out invariably took place at ATMs in Las Vegas casinos.

Interestingly, the key accomplices of the fraudster were his 49-year-old sister Sveta Khechumyan and her 41-year-old husband Smbat Khechumyan. Fake passports of citizens of Belarus and Ukraine were also "opened" in their names. Smbat Khechumyan was previously sentenced to two years in prison, while his wife is awaiting the verdict.
