Richard Murdaugh, an ex-lawyer from the US state of South Carolina, pleaded guilty to 22 financial crimes, most of which are related to banking and electronic fraud, as well as dirty money laundering. Reuters reports from the courtroom that the 54-year-old American agreed to pay nine million dollars in damages caused by his actions.

Murdo is currently serving two life sentences without the right to pardon for a double murder. In June 2021, he brutally shot his 52-year-old wife Maggie and 22-year-old son Paul, firing a clip of different weapons at each of them. The trial of a lawyer in South Carolina itself was dubbed the "trial of the century". However, Murdo himself did not plead guilty.

According to the prosecutor's office, the fear that they might find out about his financial fraud pushed the murder of the American's relatives. Carder needed a lot of money to maintain a posh lifestyle, and also because of drug addiction: for many years, the now former lawyer used heroin.

Murdo will be sentenced at a later date. He faces at least 20 years in prison for financial crimes, but, of course, this sentence will be combined with the existing one and will not fundamentally affect the fate of the carder.

A drug-addicted lawyer-carder had 27 years added to his sentence. He is already serving two life sentences for the murder of his wife and son.

Former South Carolina lawyer Richard Murdaugh was sentenced to 27 years in prison for 22 financial crimes against 18 of his clients. According to The Hill, initially there was talk of 101 episodes, but Murdo made a plea deal. In total, he managed to steal about $12 million from insurance payments, bank and wire fraud, and simple deception.

Jordan Jinks, who had been friends with Murdo since childhood, spoke about how he became one of those deceived. He went to Murdaugh, having received from doctors an estimate of the cost of treating a neck injury after an accident. Murdo assured his friend that he would be able to receive full compensation from the insurance company, after which Jinx paid the full cost of treatment. And Murdo did receive the money, but kept it for himself, ruining his friend and putting him on the brink of bankruptcy.

In his final speech, Murdaugh again blamed his addiction to painkillers and heroin for all the troubles. He apologized to his surviving son, the rest of his family and his law firm partners. He also invited all victims to visit him behind bars if they wanted further remorse. But this did not affect the court's verdict.

Murdaugh has never pleaded guilty to the crimes, for which he is already serving two life sentences without parole. According to investigators, which the court found convincing, in June 2021, he brutally shot his 52-year-old wife Maggie and 22-year-old son Paul, firing clips of different weapons at each. It is possible that the American was prompted to kill his loved ones by fear that they might find out about his financial frauds.
