Will US residents be able to safely use the store on the couch?
A TV advertising and technology company jointly owned by the three largest cable TV operators in the United States was attacked by a ransomware program that affected its operations. Owned by Comcast Corporation, Charter Communications, and Cox Communications, Ampersand provides advertisers with viewership data from 85 million households and has been operating since 1981.
According to cybersecurity researcher Dominic Alvieri, the Black Basta group claimed responsibility for the attack on the company. The company confirmed the attack, but did not specify the date of the incident and did not say whether the ransom will be paid. A company spokesperson said the incident "briefly interrupted operations." Most of the operations have already been restored, and the firm is working with specialists and law enforcement agencies on this issue.
Ampersand collects a huge amount of information about TV views on more than 165 channels and helps companies tailor ads to specific audiences. The company was originally founded as a one-stop shop, allowing advertisers to buy cable programming in local TV markets. After its founding in 1981, the company renamed itself National Cable Advertising in 1988 after partnering with three leading cable companies in the United States. It is now the backbone of the $6 billion TV advertising business.
