As a result of a global survey, Microsoft found that 99.6% of Internet users are willing to sell information about themselves for money.

Microsoft's research, The Consumer Data Value Exchange, was based on data provided by Cortana, a digital assistant similar to Siri, which analyzes email, search history, and other user information.

In the course of research, Microsoft found:
  • 54% of users expect brands to know and understand them, so they build communication based on their (customers') values and preferences;
  • 55% of users believe that data on their online activities is collected without permission;
  • 83% of those surveyed expect companies to ask them for permission to use their personal data.

Users are ready to provide information about themselves to brands:
  • 99.6% - for money;
  • 89.3% - for discounts and bonuses;
  • 65.2% - for points for purchases of goods and services.

What are users willing to give?
  • Search history - 79%
  • Site visit log - 65%
  • Purchase history - 19%.

What personal information users are willing to provide:
  • Personal history - 70%
  • Age - 75%
  • Gender - 73%.

An earlier study also found that 60% of Internet users have a positive attitude towards targeted advertising. But at the same time, 62% admitted that they would not want merchants to track their location.
