September 13 is the deadline for the bank in the battle with hackers.

The cybercriminal group Hunters International has claimed to have stolen more than 5.2 million files belonging to the London-based branch of the Chinese state-owned Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC). The criminals have set a deadline of September 13 to comply with their demands, otherwise all stolen information will be made public. According to them, they managed to steal 6.6 TB of bank data after hacking into its networks.

Hunters International, which operates on a ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) model, was first spotted in October last year. Since then, the group has rapidly gained momentum in the world of cybercrime and claims to have hacked more than 134 organizations this year. Basically, their victims are companies from various countries, with the exception of Russia.

At the moment, it has not been confirmed whether the stolen information is genuine, and ICBC representatives have not given any official comment. If the data turns out to be real, the consequences could be extremely unfavorable for the bank's customers, whose financial data will be at risk.

Banking institutions are always of particular interest to cyber extortionists and criminals involved in financial scams. Managing huge amounts of confidential information, banks are forced to make concessions to extortionists in order to prevent data leaks, which can cause customer dissatisfaction and damage the reputation of the organization. In the case of ICBC, which is one of the largest banks in the world by assets ($6.3 trillion as of mid-2024), such an incident could affect its financial performance and customer confidence.
