ATM PIN card fraud exposed

Austrian police have raised the alarm after an expert report was produced claiming bank card fraudsters have managed to work out how to get PIN codes from stolen bank cards.

Bank officials have always denied that the PIN codes are stored on the cards but after a spate of thefts from accounts using stolen cards where police have ruled out any other possibility - they have now asked the banks to investigate the thefts.

In the past people who have lost money from their accounts from crooks who have apparently had access to the secret PIN code have either been suspected of storing the PIN with the card, or of having visited a machine that was tampered with to allow PIN codes to be extracted. Some stores also save PIN numbers that can either accidentally or actively be passed on to crooks.

But after several cases where this has been ruled out, police have now come to the conclusion that the data must be somehow on the stolen cards - and that crooks have worked out how to extract it.

An Austrian prosecution spokesman confirmed: "We believe it must be an international group that is behind it, there have been too many cases now over too wide an area for any other theory to be practical."

The police expert report suggesting that the PIN is on the card is now being used by victims to get the bank's to refund the cash taken.

Victim Sigrid Polzer said: "The bank told me they had never had a case like it - and they are looking into it."

A Bank Austria spokesperson said that they were looking into the allegations and if there were security issues - they would be acted on immediately.

whether this is true or not, about the PIN being stored on the ATM card, it is an interesting loophole that actual cardholders and their carder friends can use to take out sure cash and be reimbursed by the banks lol

.

It is true. The PIN is stored in the new EMV chips cards.
Magstripe cards do not have the PIN stored on the swipe.

But this is interesting information, because as I understood it. The PIN was stored on the EMV chip card in an encrypted form or one-way hash.

This PIN is checked then the transaction is submitted to the bank for verification.

Try it next time, enter an incorrect PIN and you will realize that the pinpad will respond back instantly with an: "Incorrect PIN" error message. The amount of time for the transaction to goto the bank and return an incorrect PIN message is too short for that process to have occured. Therefore it leads one to deduce that the PIN is stored on the chip.

When the hack for the EMV chip card is released... you will get all data to create chip and get PIN at the same time without victim interaction. Can extract all data directly from chip and then goto ATM for withdrawal.

Exciting times coming soon.

Hmmm the above theory is quite right.

it is not rocket science to figure out pin is stored on the chip. you can just go get one of those bank calculators, and that ITSELF will inform you the pin is incorrect, and even lock the PIN after 3 failed attempts.

its obvoius these fraudsters in particular have learned the knowledge to acquire the PIN.

OR its just a load of bullshit.

PIN is no use until the original card can be cloned itself.

I guess its good to collect D+P by using these special skimmers to harvest PIN but the problem is cloning again.
