Hi about 3 weeks ago i was caught at microcenter for credit card fraud. I am still a minor and 17 years old. I ordered a laptop online and did store pickup. They did a background check on the credit card owner when i got there which i did not expect. They then called the police and arrested me. My excuse was that i met someone on a gaming forums and he was going to give me 100$ to go pick up a laptop for him at microcenter. im being charged with using personal identifying information without authorization. People have been telling me that nothing will happen since i do not have any priors and i am 17. My courtdate is in 2 weeks and im wondering if i should hire a lawyer or not. any help would be a appreciated thanks.

Always get a lawyer. Google your county/state laws. Since your a minor with no record you have a good chance of paying back the money, possibly community service maybe probation. I would doubt jail time. PayPal with your story that someone asked you to pick it up. Play young and dumb.

Why didnt you leave when they were doing the background check on the credit card owner? I guess it doesnt matter now but you dont even need a lawyer a public defender would suffice, its not that major of a charge and its something pretty simple for a PD to handle.

Lol if I would have known they were doing a background check then I wouldn't have even gone and they were holding onto my ID which was not the fake one

Like moneyman said ALWAYS get a lawyer. without one the legal system will fuck you to the maximum the judge sees fit.

SOunds like you will probbaly get away with a slap on the wrist - maybe community service and probation.

this is shitty ... u will be fine trust me , all depending in your state but still sounds like nothing... keep with your story , ( but dont mention this forum since they will probably conclude you did it willingly and knowingly it was false ) , they will probably dismiss it , and a legal aid will be enough (free lawyers) ... ex: ** TRUE STORY*** a friend was carding a bjs in nj and he had to leave the scene ( they were in a truck ) and they saw the truck , the store manager... eventually the troopers caught them in the turnpike in nj , they had 42 cards in the card and a truck full of merchandise and he just got 1 year probation.. no priors and 18 year old at the time. g'luck

Thats one of the rules in carding. NEVER CARRY YOUR REAL ID WHEN YOUR WORKING.

Lawyers are really over rated for petty charges. Dont waste your money, a public defender is free, just tell the courts you cant afford a lawyer. Reserve your money for a lawyer when your facing a few felony charges. Everytime I used a lawyer for some simple ass shit it always worked out the way I thought. Remember you pay a lawyer for WHO they know NOT what they know.

If you're in the states ask prosecution to give you first offenders or worst case scenario, pre-trial diversion program. The latter is basically jumping through some hoops (community service, probationary period, et etc.) for the prosecution to see if you've changed. Your best advantage is your age and your background is clean, so emphasize those to your defending lawyer.

Just make sure you don't get caught again, good luck..
