The detected cyberattack became a nightmare for the local IT manager.

In the small Austrian town of Korneuburg, located on the banks of the Danube, an emergency recently occurred, causing significant disruptions in the work of the local administration.

The city Council reported on a large-scale ransomware attack, which resulted in the encryption of all information stored by the administration, including backup copies of data. In this regard, all planned funerals were canceled due to the inability to issue death certificates, which is a prerequisite for conducting burials in Austria.

According to local media, the city authorities received demands from malefactors to pay a ransom. Deputy Mayor Helene Fuchs-Moser stressed that "everything has stopped", including the ability to print official documents such as registration forms or invoices. She also said that the municipality is not going to pay the ransom.

The incident was discovered by the manager of the city's IT department on the night of February 2, when he received a message about unusual activity in the data system. "I immediately checked and found that everything was encrypted," said Christopher Kremlicka.

In a statement on the municipality's website, it is clarified that the technical department is making every effort to solve the problem and ensure the security of government data. The authorities have already reported the incident to the local police.

The Deputy Mayor also noted that in December last year, the city's security systems were checked and certified for compliance with security standards. However, according to her, "criminals are always one step ahead."

This incident was another reminder of how important it is not only to regularly update cybersecurity measures, but also to be prepared for unexpected threats that can seriously disrupt the daily life of the city and its residents.
