Since the beginning of 2024, one and a half times more leaks have been recorded than in the whole of 2023.
The number of leaks of personal data of Russians continues to grow. Since the beginning of 2024, the Network has received more than 510 million records, which is one and a half times more than in the whole of 2023. Roskomnadzor is sounding the alarm and calling for tougher measures of responsibility for such violations.
In 2023, the RCN counted 168 leaks of personal data, which resulted in 300 million records on the Internet. The courts reviewed 87 protocols drawn up by the agency and imposed fines totaling more than 4.6 million rubles. However, according to experts, these measures are not effective enough to prevent violations.
In December last year, the State Duma introduced amendments to the Administrative Code and the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation concerning tougher liability for violations when working with personal data. If the deputies approve the proposed changes, crimes related to the cross-border transfer of PD will face up to 10 years in prison. It also provides for an increase in fines for legal entities and officials.
In July 2023, the deputies also considered revolving fines for companies for information leaks. Then the business criticized this bill, considering it disproportionate and unfair. According to representatives of the business community, such fines can lead to the bankruptcy of many companies and the deterioration of the quality of services for consumers.
Leaks of personal data are a serious problem for Russia, as they violate the rights of citizens to the confidentiality and security of their information. In addition, data leaks can contribute to the spread of fraud, cybercrime, blackmail, and other negative consequences. Therefore, it is necessary to take effective measures to protect personal data and bring violators to justice.
