Cybercriminals intend to monetize stolen data and damage the company's reputation.

Ransomware hacker group RANSOMEDVC claims to have managed to hack into the systems of multinational Japanese conglomerate Sony. Claims of successful hacking were published on both the group's regular and darknet platforms.

According to reports, RANSOMEDVC not only blocked Sony Group Corporation's systems, as ransomware usually does, but also announced its intention to monetize the stolen data, citing the conglomerate's alleged unwillingness to meet the hackers demands.

The RANSOMEDVC group has been active since 2023 and is known for its aggressive attack methods. They threatened victims with the publication of confidential data if their ransom demands were not met. They have been linked to a number of major cyber attacks, including the recent attack on the Hawaiian government's website.

Notably, RANSOMEDVC's claims about the Sony hack came shortly after the FBI and CISA alerted the public to another group of ransomware — Snatch Ransomware, whose favored method is double ransomware targeting a wide range of critical infrastructure sectors.

It should be noted separately that Sony has previously become a victim of cybercriminals, as a result of which financial information and personal data of the company's employees were disclosed. So, three hackers from North Korea were previously accused of organizing a number of cyber attacks, including the hacking of Sony Pictures.

The RANSOMEDVC group is a reminder of the threat that ransomware poses to organizations of all sizes. To protect their data, as well as that of their customers, companies need to develop new and strengthen existing cybersecurity strategies, taking the most comprehensive approach possible.
