The Interop 2024 project will create a new generation of browsers and web platforms that will be faster, more convenient and more accessible for everyone.

Microsoft together with Apple, Google, Mozilla and other companies launched the Interop 2024 project. The goal of the project is to make browsers better and provide the same experience for users on different platforms. Companies want all technologies to work without errors and not depend on the choice of browser. "This is a continuation of our work to improve the web platform, which we started in the Compat 2021, Interop 2022 and Interop 2023 projects. This year, we will focus on new features and fixes that will make life easier for you as web developers," Microsoft writes in its blog.

Since the launch of the Compat 2021 initiative and the subsequent Interop 2022 and Interop 2023 projects, many improvements have been made to the web platform. This year, we plan to implement a new set of features and fixes aimed at simplifying the daily tasks of web development.

Special attention is paid to fixing inconsistencies in the work of Flexbox and Grid, which radically changed the creation of layouts on websites. Despite the significant reduction of differences in the behavior of these technologies between browsers, some minor differences still exist, and their elimination will be one of the priorities of Interop this year.

Support for Subgrid across all major browsers is also reported, made possible by a joint effort between Firefox, Safari, and Microsoft, the latter of which contributed to Subgrid support in Chromium in 2023, making the feature available in Chrome, Edge, and other Chromium-based browsers.

The Interop project focuses on improving CSS, including the introduction of blocks such as Cascade Layers, the :has() pseudo-class, and Container Queries, which now provide cross-browser compatibility. This year, the focus is shifting to CSS nesting, which will make the code more readable and modular.

In addition, attention is paid to the dialog HTML element and the new Popover API, which will simplify working with dialog boxes and pop-up elements without the need for complex JavaScript code. Interop 2024 also includes work on many other aspects, including accessibility, scrollbar styling, HTTPS URLs for WebSocket, IndexedDB, and many others aimed at improving web development and user experience in general.
