Due to a "glitch" in the popular bakery chain, it is now possible to have lunch only for cash.

On March 23, the popular American bakery chain Panera Bread faced serious outages that affected the company's IT systems across the country. Violations affected online order systems, cash registers, telephone communication and many internal services.

According to employees, despite the fact that all restaurants continue to work, they are forced to accept only cash payment. Members of the loyalty program are temporarily unable to use their accumulated points due to problems in the system. Self-service terminals and corporate platforms with data on staff shifts and schedules are also unavailable.

"We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused and ask for your understanding. Our specialists make every effort to resolve problems as soon as possible. So far, you can place orders through cashiers in the restaurant halls," the company addressed customers in its Facebook account.* Sunday, March 24.

"Our team continues to work on system recovery. Stay tuned, we will report a solution to the problem in the coming days, " Panera Bread added yesterday.

The Panera Bread website and mobile apps are also unavailable. The app displays a message about "important maintenance and system upgrades".

In addition to interruptions in the IT infrastructure, the customer support service also does not function-when a call is made, a message is played about "unforeseen circumstances" that do not allow employees to respond.

Although Panera Bread has not yet issued an official statement, the timing and scale of the incident may indicate a cyberattack. Criminals often carry out attacks on weekends, when employees are not so careful about network security.

As of January 23, 2024, Panera Bread and its franchises operate 2,160 bakeries under the Panera Bread and Saint Louis Bread Co brands in 48 U.S. states and the Canadian province of Ontario. Panera Bread is a subsidiary of Panera Brands — one of the largest restaurant associations in the United States, which also owns the Caribou Coffee chain and Einstein Bros Bagels.

Two weeks ago, McDonald's experienced a global outage caused, according to the company, by "configuration changes." And in February, the Golden Corral restaurant chain reported a data leak of almost 180 thousand customers after a hacker attack in August 2023.

Interestingly, the British bakery chain Greggs faced an almost identical problem last week . Users on the platform started jokingly coming up with conspiracy theories. Someone even suggested that this is a global plan of some activist who wants to teach society about proper nutrition.
