How can the love of torrents and piracy completely deprive you of privacy?

In a recent security study conducted by ReasonLabs , it was revealed that pirated versions of Grand Theft Auto V (GTA 5), released in 2013, as well as World of Warcraft (WoW), which debuted as early as 2004, are among the most popular files in torrents used by attackers to distribute malware.

According to the report "The State of Consumer Cybersecurity 2024", despite the advantages of torrent file sharing over traditional methods, it is often used for piracy and distribution of malicious software.

In addition to video games, popular programs such as Microsoft's office suite or Adobe's numerous content management packages are often found among dangerous files.

Attackers inject various types of malware into these programs, including Trojans, remote access tools (RAT), fraudulent web extensions, cryptocurrency mining programs, keyloggers, and others. In particular, the GTA 5 and WoW malware files examined by experts contained DarkComet RAT, which allows attackers to fully control the infected device, capture screenshots, keystrokes, and webcam activity.

The report also highlights the proliferation of fraudulent web extensions and cryptocurrency mining programs that seriously slow down devices and increase energy consumption. One of the most common Trojans called Zusy was found in a Microsoft Office torrent file and poses a threat to Internet banking.

Overall, various Trojans are now the main threat to home users, accounting for more than 41% of all malware detections.

The study also points to an increased risk to children on the Internet, highlighting the importance of increased protection that parents should provide.

In conclusion, the ReasonLabs report warns of new cyber threats, including deepfake scams and generative AI attacks, calling for greater vigilance and greater protection in 2024.
