Cutlet Maker is a type of ATM malware, also known as "jackpotting" malware, designed to empty an ATM's cash cassettes by exploiting vulnerabilities in the machine's software and hardware. It is a flexible standalone application typically run from a USB drive, requiring physical access to the ATM's USB port to install. The malware was first identified in May 2017, initially advertised on the AlphaBay Darknet marketplace, and later sold through a dedicated website named ATMjackpot after AlphaBay's takedown.

The malware is known for its effectiveness in ATM jackpotting, a technique where attackers use either malware or specialized hardware to trick the ATM into dispensing cash. Cutlet Maker is particularly notorious for being sold on underground hacking forums, where it is advertised as a do-it-yourself kit. The malware kit, priced at $5,000 $1,499 includes detailed instructions on the required equipment, targeted ATM models, and operational tips, making it accessible for a range of cybercriminals.

Cutlet Maker exploits vulnerabilities in the ATM controller, allowing it to instruct the ATM to dispense cash. This type of attack requires physical access to the ATM, where attackers insert a USB device containing the malware into the ATM’s USB port. Once inserted, the malware takes control of the cash dispenser, prompting it to release cash, which the attacker then collects.
