Under the procedural guidance of prosecutors from the Office of the Prosecutor General, operatives from the Cyber Police Department and investigators from the Main Investigation Department of the National Police, together with colleagues from Europol, exposed the hacker during an international police operation.

According to investigators, a resident of Nikolaev infected the servers of a leading American company with a miner virus. Starting in 2021, he, using his own self-developed automatic password selection software - the so-called “brute force”, “hacked” 1,500 accounts of a subsidiary company.

Using compromised accounts, the hacker gained access to service management. Subsequently, he created a computer virus-miner for mining cryptocurrency, which he secretly infected the company’s server equipment. To ensure the operation of malicious software, people have created more than 1 million virtual computers.

It was established that over more than 2 years of such activity, he withdrew almost $2 million in cryptocurrency to controlled electronic wallets.

With the force support of the special forces unit TOR, law enforcement officers conducted authorized searches in premises on the territory of Nikolaev. Computer equipment, bank and SIM cards, electronic storage media, and other evidence of illegal activities were seized.

In the Netherlands, Europol created a special working group and VCP - a virtual command post for the immediate analysis of information obtained during investigative actions in Ukraine. Europol provided assistance in blocking the hacker's electronic wallets with the assets on them.

Investigations are ongoing to identify the man's possible accomplices.

The pre-trial investigation is carried out by investigators of the Main Investigation Department of the National Police of Ukraine on the fact of unauthorized interference in the work of information (automated), electronic communication, information and communication systems, electronic communication networks (Part 5 of Article 361 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
